Finding Light in Darkness: A Statement from New Gloucester Dems

December is a month of symbols. From the star atop a Christmas tree to the candles on a menorah, many traditions embrace the symbolism of light as we enter the dark of winter. In New Gloucester, we find symbols of light in Tiny Timber shining bright, carols around a bonfire at the UCC church, and in the generosity that shines in our neighbors’ hearts as they support food drives, heating funds, and other charities through the dark, cold winter.

While these symbols of light represent hope, symbols can also represent hate. In New Gloucester last week, an unknown person or persons drew a swastika—one of the most powerful symbols of hate and terror—on Intervale road. Swastikas as a symbol have been used increasingly to create a climate of fear and intimidation for marginalized groups, and while we don’t know the vandal’s intent, this racist and anti-Semitic symbol must always be taken seriously and responded to with condemnation for the act and support for those impacted.

We unequivocally denounce this deeply disturbing act of hate directed towards our townspeople. As a town, it is more important than ever that we continually demonstrate our commitment to a diverse, welcoming, and inclusive community. The New Gloucester Dems stand firmly against white supremacist culture and symbols, and we will always support inclusivity of all faiths, races, genders and gender identities, backgrounds, and sexual orientations.

We commend the New Gloucester Municipal Officers’ and Town Manager’s prompt statement on this incident. We hope that our newly elected state representatives will speak out to condemn this act as well.

To those in our community who are especially feeling the darkness of this act, please know there are many in New Gloucester who stand with you and believe in inclusion, respect, and empathy for others. The New Gloucester Dems hope we can be a light for those who find themselves scared or worried about their place in our community. We pledge to support you, speak up for you, and fight for your rights. We will never stop working for peace and inclusion within New Gloucester and the great state of Maine.
